Short answer: A sourcing and development guide for brands, retailers and promotional buyers turning an authorized mascot or original character into a custom squishy toy.
A mascot squishy succeeds when shoppers recognise the character at a glance and the physical toy remains pleasant after repeated handling. Identify the key character cues, adapt fragile details for the chosen material, then approve the mascot, package and brand use together.

Mascot approval checklist
| Layer | Keep fixed | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Character | Silhouette, face, signature colours and accessory | Front/side photos with approved artwork |
| Tactile product | Construction, filling, size, weight and recovery | Press/release video and dimensions |
| Brand package | Logo, copyright line, warning, barcode and pack | Artwork proof and packed sample |
Identify what makes the mascot recognisable
List the head shape, eye and mouth layout, body silhouette, main colour, clothing and signature accessory. Give highest priority to the cues customers use first. A soft product cannot retain every tiny illustration detail, so decide which details are mandatory and which may be simplified.
Submit only artwork or characters your business owns or is authorised to use. Keep the permission record with the project file; a sample does not create rights to a third-party character.
Adapt 2D artwork to a soft 3D product
Very thin limbs, floating details, deep recesses and long unsupported accessories can tear or deform. A thicker limb, rounded corner, shallow recess or attached tag often preserves the idea while improving durability. The minimum feature size and support method are [Factory confirmation].
PU foam is light for large simple silhouettes. Filled TPR creates a denser, shapeable mascot but needs careful seam and closure design. Silicone gives a firmer premium feel. Approve the face in the intended material because squeezing changes the expression.
Choose size and channel together
| Channel | Role | Design priority |
|---|---|---|
| Promotional giveaway | Compact handout or keychain | Recognisable face and durable print |
| Gift retail | Displayable collectible | Standing base and shelf-ready pack |
| Licensed merchandise | Character-led premium item | Colour accuracy and accessory detail |
Size changes material use, apparent expression, package footprint and how customers hold the toy. Record the final dimensions and tolerance as [Factory confirmation].
Evaluate the mascot sample in use
Check recognition from front, three-quarter and side views. Squeeze high-contact areas, release the toy and inspect face, print and accessories. For filled styles inspect the closure after repeated presses; for printed PU inspect high-flex areas for cracking or rub-off. Keep the approved sample as the golden reference.
Build the package around the character
A printed bag or header card suits an impulse item; a box supports a collectible; a display carton blocks a shelf. Keep warning, care copy, barcode, age grade and copyright line matched to the exact revision. Market wording and test coverage are [Compliance confirmation].
